Combating the Expanding Attack Surface

Don't Let Threat Actors Make Your Brand Tomorrow's Headline

Malicious redirects have become a common tactic to deceive users and lead them to malicious websites. To monitor and combat this, DomainSkate has developed a security tool that actively monitors malicious redirects for our clients and provides downstream analysis of websites that often appear to be “safe” but are, instead, launch points for Threat Actors.

  • Security companies are missing approximately 2% of all the domain names that contain malicious redirects downstream – i.e., they are not marking these domains as security threats.
  • A domain name that has six (6) redirects is a strong indicator of having a malicious redirect downstream. 28.6% of the domains we found with six (6) redirects had at least one malicious redirect in that stack.
  • Threat Actors prefer one redirect; we found that 93.7% of the instances of malware that was discovered in a redirect was in the first redirect.

What we learned is that when a domain automatically redirects the user to another domain, and that redirection chain continues, the Threat Actor gets big advantages. FOr example, it is easier to manage malware sites that are hidden in redirects, and intelligent routing makes sure that the victim directs users to the most effective malware based on their operating system, browser, software version, location and more.
